Krugman takes down Nate Silver’s new blog. In particular he takes Silver to task in this post (and some others) regarding his “smart guys with data don’t need experts” attitude. Silver gained his fame on the backs of political hacks, so he seems to be moving forward under the premise that experts don’t matter. In other words, because he’s shown political pundits are useless he’s assuming experts in other fields are useless. IMO, that’s just bad statistical reasoning! http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/03/23/tarnished-silver. Krugman discussing why silly little gadgets – simplified models with some ad hoc stuff tossed in – can beat more serious-looking stuff that boils down to implicit theorizing and hand-waving: http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/03/26/dare-to-be-silly
