A big wine counterfeiting scandal actually went to trial. I won’t get into the back story here, but the accused was located in Southern California and allegedly used fake labels and packaging materials to create lots of counterfeit high end bottles of wine.
Based on the article, his defense boils down to the following:
1) He was just trying to fake it to fit in with rich wine snobs (“…just trying to impress his new circle of friends – wealthy wine collectors – to fit in with them…”)
2) Everybody’s doing it (“…we know that in this wine market, counterfeits are rampant”)
3) He’s dumb (“He is not educated enough to see the difference. He starts fixing up bottles he wants to improve…”)
I’m sure some jurors have heard those lines from their kids. Stay tuned for the verdict…
